ALUMINIUM BOATS AUSTRALIA IS UNDER A NEW MANANGEMENT
On August 10, 2014, an Australian Navy patrol boat HMAS Bundaberg caught fire while undergoing refit at the Hemmant shipyard of Aluminium Boats Australia.
A comprehensive investigation into the causes of the fire immediately commenced and culminated in ABA being placed into voluntary administration on November 4, 2014. John Park and Kelly Trenfield from FTI Consulting Group were appointed as administrators. HMAS Bundaberg was subsequently decommissioned from Royal Australian Navy service at a small ceremony in HMAS Cairns on 18 December, 2014.
The unfortunate fire incident was the first of its kind in the 15-year sterling history of ABA, which saw the construction and retrofit of various classes of ferries, leisure, cruise and offshore work vessels, most of which are still in use today around the world. This is in addition to ABA's core expertise of lifetime support, training, components and designs incorporating the latest shipbuilding techniques.
Realizing the valuable knowledge infrastructure, design and collective intellectual potential of ABA; and learning from the lapses that forced it into voluntary administration, a group of investors approached the administrators and purchased the Intellectual Property of ABA, unencumbered by no financial liability. This is with a view to repositioning ABA towards more diversification with an international focus, away from specialized manufacturing which fosters dependency on public procurement like defense over global markets.
With the constitution of a sound management and legal team with varied expertise in the construction sector, the new management has strategic plans in place to build capacity to diversify and focus on niche international markets. This will be a sustainable proposition over the long term, encouraged by export-backed credit facilities that seek to boost Australian exports into far flung emerging markets.
